Retiring pilot? Check out our luxury Florida Keys home for sale, close to the Marathon Airport.
Relocating to a new area for your retirement can be a daunting adventure. Here on Duck Key and if you are a pilot, there are two ways to meet "your people". First, become a member of the Club Duck Key. We have lots of events there and the people are "instant" friends. Second, join the Marathon EAA chapter. If you are a pilot then you already know that pilots are a great, friendly, always helpful, always interesting group of people. We have many retired pilots in the Florida Keys.
If you already are or are planning to become a pilot, the Florida Keys is one of the most fun and beautiful places to fly. Nearby, 15 minutes from our home on Duck Key, is Marathon [MTH] which is an uncontrolled, paved, wonderful airport. The runway is 5000' long and local traffic is on 122.8. This airport is unusual in that it allows touch and go traffic. There are two FBO's with lots of tiedowns and hangars. Sign up early for a hangar as this is a popular flight destination. We get everything from large plush business jets to WWII warbirds and lots of sport and experimental aircraft at this Middle Florida Keys airport.
The local Marathon EAA chapter is friendly, fun loving and has members of all ages. At the monthly meetings, Ed Waldorf grills great hamburgers and hot dogs. We meet at the Marathon Airport and discuss topics like Young Eagles - a program to get the younger generation interested in flying. We are proud to sponsor kids with scholarships and the Chapter's Florida Keys' pilots take them flying in their own planes.
Flying in the Florida Keys is a special experience because of all the colors in the water from pale turquoise to deep indigo blue, dotted with palm tree islands and sand banks. We local pilots enjoy "fly fishing", taking your aircraft out over the ocean or bay to see what kind of Florida Keys ocean wildlife you may encounter. Whales, sharks, turtles, giant sunfish - it's all out there waiting for you to discover. I have noticed even flying low in my Legend Cub that the Florida Keys' fish and mammals never seem to notice me and carry on with their fishy business uninterrupted. It's like an airborne wildlife safari - Keys style. You can be up for 2 hours looking around at the sights before you know it, so don't forget your preflight! Flying over water is not as dangerous as some might believe, as long as you have made a few preparations like a waterproof emergency personal GPS and a some sort of individual floating device.
Key West's controlled commercial airport is nearby and has a fun airport restaurant. Whether you live here and fly or fly to get here, the Florida Keys is a one of a kind flying experience.
Homestead, Fl is also nearby with a controlled commerical airport and there is a field for sailplanes.
The pilots from the Marathon area always enjoy a "fly-in" breakfast at some destination in Florida. We'll be looking for you at the windsock! Be sure to call for details, this home is the right price for a couple that loves to fish, fly, and relax in the Florida Keys on the exclusive island of Duck Key, Fl.
