This house is priced to sell: $1,210,000. This is the price we paid August 2005, so the lucky person that buys this wonderful house gets all the upgrades listed below for FREE !
The owner, Gerald Ward, is a master carpenter. Wood is his passion. He believes since wood is a natural product, it makes people more comfortable and secure in their surroundings.
We have finished this remodel and below is a list of what we accomplished:
- We removed the interior stairwell and installed an interior elevator.
- We removed the old kitchen cabinets and installed solid wood hickory cabinets (all plywood construction instead of medium-density fibreboard which contains formaldehyde).
- Our counter top is 2" thick laminated character cherry, sanded to 400 grit (feels like marble) then 3 coats of spar varnish to protect the wood from everyday scratches.
- We placed a free standing island in the middle of the kitchen with the 2" thick laminated character cherry counter top but oiled it, so it can be used as a butcher's block.
- We removed and updated the electric in the kitchen.
- We have replaced all the kitchen appliances. See the specifications for the white oven, black stove top, white dishwasher, and white refrigerator.
- We removed the sheetrock interior walls in the large kitchen/living room and installed custom mahogany paneled walls. These walls have 5 coats of spar varnish finish to protect and make them easy to clean. Mahogany is a natural decay and insect resistant wood.
- We removed all of the sheetrock ceilings in the house and installed custom cedar paneling. These ceilings have 3 coats of spar varnish finish to protect them. Cedar is a natural decay and insect resistant wood.
- We removed the hallway's sheetrock wall, which leads to the two bedrooms, and installed cedar paneling, also finishing the wood with 3 coats of spar varnish.
- We replaced the old fans with these interesting fans. The Artemis Mahogany with Mahogany Vanes are in the living room and kitchen. The ArtemisMaple with Maple Vanes are in the two bedrooms.
- The living room and kitchen overhead lighting can be pulled up or down.
- We left the sheetrock on the walls in the two bedrooms but sanded it to a smooth texture. For some reason the sheetrock was quite rough and could cut your hands! We painted the sheetrock a neutral color of latex "coconut milk".
- We created a 3 piece custom douglas fir crown-molding for a beautiful transition from all the walls to the cedar ceilings. We also finished it with 3 coats of spar varnish.
- The exterior color of the house was a dirty white. We painted the exterior a pretty tropical turquoise - like our beautiful Florida Keys waters.
- We painted the concrete roof/metal balcony handrails/outside stairs/hurricane shutters white. We painted an accent turquoise on the drip edge of the roof.
- We planted 39 drought resistant Florida Keys plants. See the landscaping page on this website for more details.
When we purchased this Key's house, the kitchen cabinets where white particle-board, the walls and ceiling were sheetrock. It had a very "cold" feeling. The interior stairwell was steep and the treads were narrow. The exterior paint was a dirty white with bronze balcony handrails and bronze hurricane shutters. BUT, we loved the floor plan, the great island of Duck Key, the friendly neighbors, and all of what the Florida Keys has to offer as far as fun things to do. AND, Gerald had great design-plans in his head for this Duck Key House!
